[ Hella haunted? More like hella hoax. In Ed's opinion, there was an explanation for practically anything. It was always a matter of finding enough clues to make sense of the situation. Strange sounds could be explained away with the expansion of metals in the surroundings or animals in the walls, creepy photos were more often than not a result of photo manipulation, and witness accounts ... always had to be taken with a grain of salt. Basically, he has a pHD in skepticism and he's not afraid to use it. Ed also has a pHD in being a gutsy asshole; while that has landed them into dangerous situations in the past, it's often a useful trait when investigating the great unknown. ]

This is the place. [ Incidentally, he happens to have a photo of the mansion they were headed to on hand. Ed brings it up to the window for Bolin to compare. Both buildings are identical. In short, he's giving Bolin no excuse to back out and drive off. ] Don't be a baby. I still don't understand how a guy your size can be such a scaredy-cat.

[ Most people who ring them up about allegedly "supernatural" problems often expect Bolin to be the one taking charge, not the guy who only goes up to his nose. Ed still gets sore about that. ] Get out of the car.

[ To reinforce his order, Ed pushes at Bolin's seatbelt buckle, releasing the seatbelt with a click. He then opens the side door to get out of the van. Pabu follows after him, jumping on Ed as Ed hops off the van. He's eager to finally get started.

That leaves Bolin alone ... in the van ....

Also, there happens to be a convenient 2spooky graveyard behind the creepy mansion. Have fun with that. ]

Size doesn't matter to ghosts! They'll haunt anybody! [ Noooooo Ed stop why are you doing this to him.

It's like this happens almost every time.

Sometimes he wishes he were less afraid of the supernatural and also not so inclined to take orders. But he usually stops thinking about it before enacting change. This is the worst possible business. But it makes them money. Why do people keep hiring homeless teenagers to investigate their mansions?! Except for the people who think they're prostitutes or murderers, anyway. Why does he even do this? It's always so scary, what kind of a life has he taken on...

Bolin stays in his seat after the van's been abandoned for all of three seconds before he disproves any theory that bulk cannot equal speed. Ed may just recognize the particular feeling of a huge baby catching up to him and grabbing his sleeve. He is exactly three shades short of turning into a backpack in terms of clinginess right now. ]

Can you please not leave me alone by a cemetery again?

[ ah ed is pretending the solicitations for paid sex never happened ... especially that one time someone asked for the both of them at once .....

Anyway, once out of the van, Ed doesn't even listen to Bolin anymore. He's appraising the house in search of anything that looked out of the ordinary. Out of the ordinary for a very stereotypical-looking 'haunted' house, anyway. He's also looking for openings around the house that people may come in and out of. This apparent ghost - a reportedly headless young woman who carried her decapitated head around - must have entered through somewhere.

He only turns his attention to Bolin when the bulky backpack-person comes grabbing onto him from behind. This is something he's used to also. He's so accustomed to it that Ed doesn't even bat an eyelash or make any move to shake him off. ]
It's not my fault you're so slow.

[ Pabu turns his gaze to Bolin, as if agreeing. There's a reason Ed gets along with Pabu better than he does any other animal he's ever met. Pabu also scampers across Ed's shoulder to curl around Bolin's neck, so it's not complete ferret-betrayal at least. ] You know what the case is, right? There have been reports of some headless woman roaming these parts. Some kids have disappeared too.

[ which is totally not terrifying at all ]

bolincredible: (sad about stuff)

[personal profile] bolincredible 2014-12-12 05:10 am (UTC)(link)
I know what the case is. [ A little glum, or at least as glum as Bolin tends to go. He relinquishes one of his hands from his death-grip to give Pabu a scratch behind the ears.

How did he raise such a brave, curious little fella like this?

Well, curious he can totally understand. Self-preservation should have been higher on the list somehow, though.

So as far as a headless woman roaming the area goes, Bolin would be totally fine to let her keep doing her thing. Rock your afterlife however you want. But reuniting families and missing kids... he really can't turn his back there. No matter how terrifying it is. And it is seriously terrifying. ]

But I don't have a good feeling about it. [ wow what a shock ]

[ That doesn't come as a surprise to Ed at all. In fact, they almost always have conversations similar to this before venturing into scary caves or houses. It's almost formulaic.

One would expect a best friend to offer words of support. To comfort Bolin and reassure him that everything would be fine. But then Ed goes and ... doesn't. ]
You aren't supposed to.

[ The only simple, uneventful cases are the ones that turn out to be dead leads. Ed doesn't like those very much, because they're always such a waste of time and gas money. For all the other cases, there's always some danger involved. Always the chance of being being tied up and thrown in the sea or trapped in some abandoned cellar where no one would ever find them. Somehow, they always got out of those situations, and Ed was confident that today was no different.

More importantly, who is letting these homeless teenagers handle what the police should really be handling?

Ignoring Bolin's complaints, Ed walks on. He knows that Bolin will still follow him no wonder how reluctant he felt about it, if only for the fact that the alternative was being truly left alone. ]
We'll just check the place out. Search for some clues.

[ He motions to knock on the door, when the old door appears to open itself. This is clearly the wind ok. ]
bolincredible: ([whimpering noises])

[ S q u e a k s.

In a very, very manly fashion, of course. ]

If I die first, tell Pabu I love him. [ Mako already fuckin knows, it's on every postcard.

He prefers Ed annoyed and skeptical over equally spooked, personally. It's not a comfort in the strictest sense, but it's not a bad sign. Much in the same way as Pabu perking up and sniffing the air. Familiarity and routine in a dark, questionable place. Bolin draws in a long, steadying breath through his nose and tries to look on the bright side.

Like hey, he's not crying. That's great. ]

Tell him yourself. [ Which is one way of saying 'you aren't going to die' and another way of saying 'Pabu is RIGHT THERE. HE'S RIGHT THERE, BOLIN.' ]

That was just the wind. [ Or so he ... reasons, because he can't see any mechanism wheeling the door open from where he's standing. Plus, he can also feel a draft blowing in their direction so maybe it really was the wind, yeah! Ed holds Bolin's collar and tugs at it, urging him to walk too. Not that he needed to since the guy is probably clinging to him for dear life.

He then scolds Bolin lightly for something he's not doing yet but probably will be doing sometime in the night. ]
Don't go crying on me like always.

[ Ed does not know what to do when grown men are crying. Or when anyone is crying, for that matter. So he just pretends it's not happening. ]
bolincredible: (bro pls you embarrass yourself)

[personal profile] bolincredible 2014-12-19 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not crying! Tear-free! [ Wow, Ed, he thought you knew the sounds of his sobbing better. Bolin follows along... moderately easily. All things considered.

(So he'll cry later when he thinks someone's gonna die.) ]

Big place. Kind of abandoned Victorian-y. How are there so many abandoned creepy mansions in the world?

[ Vans are so much better than everything wow.

He's keeping an eye on their surroundings in the way that true cowards as related to ghosts do: a glance to spare for every exit, wafting curtain, and creamy floorboard. And a little looking to spare besides. It's always such a conundrum reconciling genuine terror with a lot of natural curiosity, but he tries. Ssssort of. ]

[ 'For now' is Ed's mental reply to that. It's not a real 2spooky mystery until the buff guy starts wailing. ]

Those 'abandoned creepy mansions' give us work. [ So respect them, Bolin. They're the reason you can pig out on spinach noodles. They're the reason you can buy treats to train Pabu with.

The real question should be why two teenagers are depending on this kind of unstable freelance work to sustain themselves in the first place. Why aren't they in school? Where are their parents? We just don't know.

Ed considers suggesting they split up to cover more ground, but he also knows it's going to be a little hard peeling this large, easily-spooked dog-person off of him. Anyway, he doesn't have time to ponder that further, because the lights begin to flicker before going out completely.

Enjoy this pitch-blackness, homie. ]
What the hell? What happened?
bolincredible: (will kel ALWAYS love orange soda?)

[ Don't think about their sad backstories and lack of formal education... it's okay... they're forging their own destinies. While their brothers are somewhere shaking their heads, probably.

AND BOLIN DOES NOT ENJOY THIS PITCH-BLACKNESS?? Allow him to demonstrate by literally hugging Ed in fear. Ohhh, he hates the ones that get his heart pounding this early in the investigation. ]

Well, I'm pretty sure we didn't go blind, if that helps. [ It's not that he's trying to act like he's not freaking out, so much. Because they both have enough working experience together to understand that he is freaked out right now. He just also thinks it might be important to establish their lack of likely blindness. It's the right thing to do.

Plus if he's talking, it doesn't leave an opening for any creepy whispers to float in. To hell with spooky whispering. That monthly quota got reached last week. ]

[ And now they're back to square one. Ed has one cheek smushed against one very built pair of pectorals and the rest of him is encased in a tight hug. This time, it's a little hard to move, so he does protest against the clinging. ]

Not so hard, Bolin! I can't breathe! [ He finally pries the arm that's found its way around his nose off of him. ]

Do you have to do this every time? [ Though this time, it might make sense to stay huddled together in case one of them gets separated in the darkness. ]

I don't know why you're even so scared! You could just beat up whatever comes our way! [ For the 'smart one' Ed's way of dealing with problems sure is 'take it head-on and beat it up'. But yes, he has seen Bolin's shoulder-tackles, and they are gold-standard shoulder-tackles. Logically, there should be nothing that scares him. If Ed were of Bolin's height stature, he would be virtually unstoppable. ]

Just calm down. I think I have a torchlight. [ And he goes digging through his bag for said torchlight.

You can't beat up ghosts, Ed! That's why-- it's rule number one, you can't even touch them. [ That's why they are the scariest things in the entire world forever and no one can change his mind.

... Pabu is making a citizen's arrest, isn't he. :c ]

[ Ed is still pretty sure he can beat this ghost up. Especially since a lot of their cases have only turned out to be hoaxes so far. You can punch hoaxes. They're fleshy. So, as his mind of science and reason dictates, if something pops out at them, punch it until it can't move.

also spoiler while they were fumbling in the dark pabu already solved the mystery ]

I wouldn't be able to hear any of those things -- [ No, seriously, please tell him he brought that flashlight because pitch darkness with a side of clingy musclehead is just not his style. ] Wait, Pabu knows how to work a fusebox?

[ That fire ferret never ceases to amaze. Also, he finally found that flashlight so things are looking up too!! Ed flicks it on. ]
bolincredible: (i'm... i'm not gonna do that.)

[ Oh thank god a flashlight. Literally the most relieved sigh in the world. And the real perk is it means that death grip loosens up just a little.

Talking about Pabu is a pretty big help. ]

You're -- pretty good. [ Comes the rather absent-minded compliment. Compliments from Ed are like elusive unicorns. ] At this training thing.

[ Why isn't Bolin doing that for money instead ... Why is he snooping around and solving mysteries 2spoopy ... No one knows.

Okay, it doesn't actually sound like Pabu is working the fusebox so they might have to find it themselves. It's probably in the basement?? ]
We should head down to the basement.

[ which sounds like the best idea ever ]
bolincredible: (it turns out he died)

Well, Pabu liked having a little direction, you know? [ It's all part of Bolin's long quest to find true happiness or his long-lost brother or whatever the hell gets people into mystery-solving these days.

He's taking that compliment and keeping it right in his proverbial pocket for a rainy day, Ed. Thank u. That means he probably has to immediately take it back out of his pocket so he can screw his face up and remember that he voluntarily does this for a living. ]

Just leave room on your coat sleeve for him to grab... if he believes hard enough, they can totally survive this creepy deadly mansion. ]
