[ It took some real doing to finally get Korra alone for another go-round of Republic City. Which Bolin guesses he can understand. Between Avatar duties and saving the world and the general craziness that life keeps tossing around anymore, it's fair that a couple of people might not be able to get together.

Not like together, together, just... together. Sharing a vicinity and having fun with the coolest, toughest, most talented, buffest, beautiful girl in the known universe, and not thinking too much about it. Or. Or something like that? He's gotten really good at not thinking about it, actually, out of sheer necessity. Because it's not like just being friends with Korra isn't incredible! If there's anything Bolin can say he knows he's made for, it's making the best of what he has, and what he has is more friends than he's ever had before. And it's nice.

And he can be fine with that.

He's just glad he could arrange this at all. They had that sort of date situation, however long ago, and that included good food and great views, but it was sort of supposed to be a two-parter situation. Korra never really did get a chance to look around the entire city, never seems to have chances for that kind of stuff at all. Bolin's always happy to help give someone a break. Especially when there's a killer little place to do it a little ways outside of the city proper, all trees and ocean view and grass. He hasn't been up this way in a while. So it's like it's doubly nice to get back to it. Bolin kicks a pebble along the trail as they go and figures he won't try looking a gift ostrich-horse in the beak. ]

You picked a really great day to come by some free time! Mostly because if the weather was bad right now, I'd have zero backup plans for us. And who wants to waste a perfectly good day off on not knowing what to do, right?

( lydia is mesmerized by the sheer force he seems to be able to harness. she still doesn't quite understand how it works. it's definitely not science, but he said it's not really magic, either. either way... it's improbable, and yet here he is. rocks. dirt. earth in general. he lifts them and tosses them about and creates things from them like it is no more difficult than a simple second nature. she watches him for a few minutes, her head tilting further and further to the side as she just tries to figure out how the physics even make sense at all - which, by the way, they do not - before she speaks up again. )

And what did you say they call it again? Bending?

Yeah, that's right! [ Bolin's never been all that great for an explanation on most any front as it stands. The weird not-science, not-magic, spiritual energy thing made it nigh impossible. Especially for something he's just been able to do most of his life. He flattens a decent-sized rock between his palms, pulls them back apart and elongates it again. ]

You know, you've got your basic earth, fire, water, or air, just kind of depending on what your family can do and where they're from. Unless you're the Avatar, because then you can bend all four elements at once, no problem.

And this is an ability you're born with? ( she's actually taking notes between watching him. it's fascinating. there may be sketches along with it. possibly. he's intriguing and not hard to draw and not bad to draw, either. lydia's eyes stay on the rock, and she's genuinely mesmerized by how he manages to expand and contract it... like it's so easy. )

How long did it take you to learn that kind of control?

Yep. I mean, it can take a few years to figure it out, but you get there eventually. And I guess control just sort of comes with practice? [ He frowns thoughtfully. ] And kinda depends on who you learn from! Like Mako and I taught ourselves most of what we know, and we picked a lot up for pro-bending, but sometimes people get trained by a master or a relative or something, too. You know, everyone's different, that kinda thing.

That sounds... Amazing. ( she fidgets for a moment, eyes cast downward. ) I'd give anything for that sort of guidance. Anything. Any example that wasn't just... Chance.

[ Well that sounds like a regular bummer and a half. Bolin pauses with the rock clenched back together in his fist, looking over to her with a light frown. ]

What do you mean?

( she shrugs her shoulders lightly, lifting her eyes only to stare off at nothing. )

The abilities I have. The only other person I know who has them is in an insane asylum. ( then she hugs her arms around herself loosely. ) And no one else knows enough to really train me, or help me hone in on them. So I just have to learn it myself.

...that's terrible. [ Even when they were on the street, he sort of had Mako to help him figure a couple of things that worked for his bending. As much as firebending could translate. And then there were a few of the gang members around who could give him a tip here and there, and then Toza taught him everything he knows about the pro bending style, even some of the really basic traditional stances.

He guesses he's always had a little guidance on his side. Bolin sticks his hands in his pockets and moves to stand next to her. ]

I mean, you're super smart! You're really, really great. I don't think that you can't figure it out by yourself? [ Whatever those abilities are, exactly. ] But that still must be really tough to have to handle.

I think someone tried to make a huge bowl of ramen in my bathtub. There's noodles everywhere in my bathroom.

wow thats really good accuracy. but this is cool its like a gumshoe mystery! with noodles! are those still edible by the way because i make a mean pot of reheated noodles.

you should come round and finish them off no one else is going to. I bet it was that man I paid to hang out in the garden some times. I have no idea what that guy's deal was!

it's making it seriously impossible to find people to pay to do stuff around here who won't get all weird later.

right? and if you do background checks or something you lose the mystery!

( a small breath leaves her lips, a stillborn laugh. she looks down, her lips painted with a sad smile, then turns slightly and looks over at him. )

I'm sure I'll figure it out eventually. But there are so many pieces to the puzzle that I don't even know how to find, let alone put into place. I have this -- thing -- but I can't always use it. I don't really have control over it. It just sort of... happens.

[With the other half of Team Avatar heading back to Republic City, Mako called in by Lin and Asami having to see to Future Industries, Korra opted to stay behind in Zaofu along with Bolin. The metal city was ideal for her to pick up her metalbending again, that and Bolin had plenty of earth to practice his lavabending in and out of the city. That and Korra was kicked out of Republic City by President Raiko.

The awkward vibe she was getting from Mako had been weighing down on her while he was there. Without Asami to talk to about it, she found Bolin before Suyin would send a guard to notify them when dinner would be ready.]

Hey, how's your first half day with it just being us in this place? [She put her hands on the belt around her waist that housed her metal cables.] Less pressure?

[Both from Mako pushing a little too hard for his brother to improve his skill and from possibly messing up from noticing Opal was watching him.]

Must be kinda scary. Not really having control or anything. [ He knows he'd be scared if bending just sort of happened and he had no control over it. All the time, not just when someone got really emotional. Of course he's also a huge nerd so maybe that's just him. ] If there's ever anything I can do to help, just say the word. Even if you're still figuring stuff out, I think it's pretty good to have someone to talk it out with.

You know, I think so! I haven't wrecked any buildings or melted anybody... it's nice! [ Especially on the Mako front. Not that he can't understand why it's really important to learn to control... deadly face-melting molten earth. Or anything. Like, it's kind of an important thing to learn. He gets it.

But Mako's always been a little heavy-handed when it comes to life-threatening worries. It's hard to push your limits when he's pretty sure the limit will burn your arm off or something. Annnd when you don't want to burn your arm off or something in front of a really great girl who hasn't seen you completely mess something up yet. It's a hard-knock life. ]

How about you? I mean, I know you're kind of a natural at metalbending and you've been practicing, annnd we're. You know, right here in the middle of the metalbending capital of the world and stuff, but. Yeah. How's it going?

Kind of nice actually! Not having anything melt down has been a big help. [She grins and pats the circular canisters of metal cables on her hips.] I can’t wait to be able to use these things everywhere instead of only in the practice area. Pretty sure Wing is too, and not just to have someone else to play power disc with.

[Poor guy’s probably not used to having a novice metalbender wipe the floor with him.]

Hey. If you really want to cut loose, maybe Suyin will let us take Naga out to the mountains. [She gives Bolin a quirky half smile.] As long as you don’t turn it into a volcano or anything.

Oooh, that could be fun! [ Oh, wait. ] Not the. Not the volcano, just for the record. I think I wanna keep my mountain-destroying record at a firm zero. I bet it'd be nice to have some space to practice without worrying about accidentally wrecking part of a city or whipping someone with a cable, though! If you really think we can get Suyin on board, you've got yourself a date.

[ SEE, THE THUMBS UP MEANS IT'S SUPER LEGIT. ]

A bending date. I think I can work with that. [Double fist bump, thumbs up included. She smirked when a guard approached them that dinner is going to be whenever they want since the Beifong’s schedule has been jostled from Opal’s departure.]

Guess the chef’s running the kitchen all night. [Once the guard’s gone, she looks back to Bolin.] You going to be okay here? I know you and Opal were hitting it off pretty well.

[Something she had a hand in, but Korra really liked seeing Bolin genuinely happy.]
