Oh yeah, she's great at that. But, you know. Kuvira's making enemies and FAST. It's not gonna be long before the other nations decide it's time to do something about it and she could get caught in the cross fire and...

[ Oh man, should he... roll after him... he doesn't want to squash him into the side of the tent, but he doesn't just want to leave him there in his Varrick-y ball of misery.

Someone who wouldn't have kept treating her like that if he knew it would drive her to die for a crazy dictator? At least, I hope so.

I just... she never said anything, you know? How was I supposed to know she was unhappy?

[Varrick uncurls a little under Bolin's hand, sighing.]

I dunno. I'm not really a relationship-advice guy. [ All things considered. ] I do think it doesn't have to stay that way, though. If you know now, and we get the day saved and all. And apologize. She could come around!

[profiteers]

You're right, kid.

[Varrick rolls onto his back, staring up at the earthen canopy.]

And hey, if we save the day, that's sure to win her back, right?

[igneous]

Sure! Why not? And even if it doesn't, the day is still totally saved. That means there's a chance to try again! [ It's almost a win-win, right? ]

[profiteers]

And then when the day is saved we could go on a vacation! I haven't had time off in ages. I still have this great vacation property on Ember Island. A little R&R is what we all need after this.

[Yes you'd be coming too, Bolin, I hope that's understood.]

And indoor plumbing. I miss that most of all right now.

[igneous]

[ Doesn't even question this apparent future vacation with Varrick. That or he assumes Varrick means Varrick and Zhu Li. Maybe both.

Zhu Li could definitely use a vacation, after all. ]

I miss it, too. Being indoors is just really, really nice. It's seriously underrated!

[profiteers]

Yeah. I had MORE than enough outdoor time when I was growing up. Like, more than a life time's worth. I don't know if you've ever slept in an igloo without a fire going, but it ain't much better than just sleeping outside.

[igneous]

Yeah, it sounds like it would mostly just stop the wind? That was why Mako and I used to sleep under the bridge in the park. When we could, I mean. [ There's something to be said for nice scenery. Under the bridge was a popular spot back in the day. ] Of course, I did have Mako around, so it was pretty much free fire on demand. And no arctic tundra.

[ If "demand" means "wheedling." ]

Yeah, that must have been a plus. You kids were lucky you made it through, you know, not everyone does when they're dumped as young as you were.

[What is it about lying next to someone in the pitch dark that always makes you open up in weird and unexpected ways? He's still staring up at the ceiling, but he can feel the warmth of Bolin's body pressed in next to his, and it's comforting in a strange way.]

We couldn't afford any fuel most of the time when I was a kid. Sometimes people in the village would drop stuff off, but it stopped happening after a while. People only got so much charity in 'em.

[igneous]

It's mostly because I had Mako looking out for me. He always knew what to do. [ He blames it on the fact that they're super tired and also in the dark. Not that he's ever been much for a brain to mouth filter when he's super alert or anything. ]

You'd think charity would be more popular, huh? [ Sorry he wasn't born yet, bud. He'd have charitized everything. ]

[profiteers]

Yeah, not everyone's thinks like you do, kid. You're a one of a kind.

[Varrick gives him an affectionate cuff on his arm.]

For most people it's all about looking after number one, yanno? I had to figure that out pretty early, no one else was going to.

[igneous]

[ He's quiet for a few seconds at that, but there's an undeniable touch of fondness when he does speak up. Talk about a trip down nostalgia lane. ]

Hustle or get hustled, huh? [ He was pretty terrible at making that stick, too. ]

[He turns around to give Bolin a little smile in the dark.]

Yeah, something like that.

I've seen that work out for people. As far as making money goes, anyway. So I guess I'm glad it got you far enough to save us from prison and hard labor and everything? [ Since...... it's prison and hard labor. ] But you're still way better off now. Only looking out for yourself can keep you going, but it's pretty terrible at giving you anywhere to go.

[ He and Mako didn't get off the streets to make an honest living until they trusted Toza. And Varrick trusted him to not let them die in a horrible explosion, apparently, so now they're here. And that should count for something.

Honest Jerk Varrick is better than War-mongering Jerk Varrick. Bolin might be mid-camp experience otherwise. ]
